RE: Server crashing multiple times a day

Cannot use /say in major cities and this seems to be why.
Some time ago the official debian/ubuntu guide for installing the game stopped working with the launcher only freezing and crashing 1 second after hitting either Update or Install. I went and got installed via steam proton with my own guide: https://forum.ascension.gg/topic/476/linux-general-support-read-1st-post/24 But I cannot use /say in game
Now, i installed WoW on a VM with a GPU passthrough. If we ignore how nerdy that sounded. I still cannot use /say in major cities.
Pretty sure it's because both steam proton and my VM machine hits the "you're a vm so probably a gold seller" warning of some sort. GM @Nora believed this to be the case too.
So if you're unable to use /say in linux, or some other system that isn't wow. That might be it?
anyone ells having issues?

Hi! I'm having trouble with the launcher. Every time I start the download process the launcher window disappears but it doesn't close on the taskbar. Also I'm using Fedora 38 and I'm using the .Appimage launcher.
This is a common issue for a lot of Distros. I would suggest downloading the .exe install version instead and load it via steam to install it. works better.
Down below is an example of how I did it.@Eilytres said in Linux: General Support (Read 1st post):
I managed to get it running on Pop!_os, and also with a slight improvment.
I first followed the original instruction but noticed that I had limited performance. The guide tell you to install wine x32 instead of x64 which limited ram usage to 8gb. also GPU drivers (although being AMD which is better native to Linux than nvidia) were very bad. Couldn't raid in Karazhan normal without getting half a frame per minute.
Instead: Installed steam, added the ascension-setup-xxx.exe as a "non-steam game" and forced it to run with proton 7.0-6. Installed the game via steam.
I went into the folder where the game was installed: (...steamapps/compata/1234567xxx/pfx/drive_c/program files/Ascension Launcher) added Ascension Launcher.exe into Steam as a none steam game instead (trying to boot the game via ascension-setup-xxx.exe would only continuously reinstall the game in a new folder to no end). Again pushing steam to launcher Ascension Launcher.exe to run Proton 7.0-6.
Now I can boot the game, installing addons works fine too.
Pros: My computer can now utilize the Proton API which is much better than old Wine. GPU can now actually use a lot more of its performance and I can also use more of my 16gb ram.
Issue that persists: DivxTac.dll has to be deleted every time the game update or verified integrity. Something in this file makes the GPU drivers for linux go mad. Not sure if it's only an AMD problem.
I tested this on a fresh Fedora install, but sadly to no avail. I only ended up with error messages as soon as I booted Ascension from Steam.
Hope this helps more players!

RE: Linux: General Support (Read 1st post)
@Pocadek A few options, for me I have a windows server that I downloaded the client from.
If you can fool your browser that you're on a windows machine you can do that (should be doable in firefox)
use a VM
or login to another computer and download it.

@Eilytres I've been fighting this all day. Not working for me as well
If you follow my guide on how to do it via steam then it works at least on debian based builds.
What system are you on?

RE: Linux: General Support (Read 1st post)
As of launcher 114 I can no longer use the official wine method provided for Ubuntu/Debian user. My steam solution up below still works.

I have been looking to see when the new release will happen. I have not seen anything, Can someone either point me in the right direction, or give me an idea. That would be swell. Thank you ! By the way I love this game! Thank you, PA!

RE: New Gem for Shield Tanks
I don't know if I fully agree to this statement. I do agree that there's no block gem. however if a tank decides to pickup a shield. He still has Block / Parry / Dodge. No matter how you twist and turn on this. A 2 handed tank, or dual wielding parry tank. Will always skipp out completely on block.

@Eilytres did you ever figure out what is causing this issue. currently fighting the exact same problem right now
I found an alternative way wich sadly involved distro hopping to Pop!_os I of course tried the same procedure on Fedora first but was unable to get it functioning.
Either you can do the same or perhaps the guide can help you find a solution:

Hi there!
I'm trying to run the launcher on Fedora 36 (kernel 6.0.10-200.fc36.x86_64) using the most recent appimage (97). The launcher opens just fine but every time I click install (live or ptr) the launcher crashes. I have tried reinstalling following the Fedora install guide here on the forums as well as using the most recent Lutris install script, both with the same result. Disabling animations also makes no difference.
Is there any known or suggested fix for this?
Will gladly provide more information on request.I have the same issue.

RE: Linux: Unofficial Fedora installation guide
@Chielus said in Linux: Unofficial Fedora installation guide:
Error "Update Ascension.exe" Fedora 36:
Due to the DNF repository changing some packages for the current Wine installation, there can occur an error that gamefiles are out of date, without a update being given by Ascension Launcher. This is due to the fact that Wine cannot fully run WoW in Fedora with the default settings provided by DNF.
To fix:
Remove all instances of wine and winetricks from the system. If asked, you can leave the prefix as it is.
sudo dnf remove wine winetricks
After this add the new repository for Wine:
sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/fedora/36/winehq.repo
Either use stable or staging. Staging has the best shot to be compatible with other system packages, as it uses newer packages then stable does.
sudo dnf install winehq-staging winetricks
Or:
sudo dnf install winehq-stable winetricks
Then follow the steps provided from step 2 in the original post and onward as usual. In case the system reports that something already exists, simply continue. If it still fails after these steps, please report in this thread.
I tested your guide, however getting the same crash as many others report. Launcher opens. you hit install and the launcher crashes and cannot continue. Works without a problem until you hit "install".
I'll gladly assist in any questions to find the problem!
