This setup is for a 1080p monitor, for ranged DPS (with or without pet) and for solo play and/or leveling. It automatically hides some elements during combat or while out of combat.

If you have taken all the steps, you would also have made a wineprefix for the 32bit libraries, mono and what not. If you have skipped that step, then please do so right now.

Running the game with wine WoW.exe won't do you any favors for 2 reasons. First up you are running a default wine session, which will cause errors. Second you are targetting wow.exe and that should be ascension.exe in this case.

Adjust paths to your local install, but do me a favor and run it with this command:

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.config/projectascension/WoW wine $HOME/location-of-gamefolder/Ascension.exe

Feel free to post the output of that command (at least last few lines like you did earlier)

So hi there. I play a character called Chielus on the A'lar server. Been a long(-er) time player who took a break for family life and now has some free time to play some games. And Ascension was a instant choice. Happy to see all the changes that where made last years.

Bit about myself, am a non-balding, 30 something dad from the Netherlands. I play mostly casual with a small addiction to ironman/nightmare. I am a long time (15+ years) Linux user and am happy to help anybody out with questions regarding that. Oh and I generally lurk in the help section of Discord these days.

@Qordinator Let's be brutally honest here, as you are asking for it.

Point 1) This is subjective. It's not the server community or staffs responsibility to be socially aware and act accordingly. That is up to you. If that happens to you in a variety of situations and/or communities, then try to learn instead of ventilate.

Point 2) It's not if GM's can handle a term or not, personally can say that in direct message with a variety of staff I have both said and received much worse in objective language use. But that is a private conversation, not a public one. In the public one rules apply and GM's simply enforce them. It's like talking to a police office that you find law ABC unfair, the officer cannot help you as it's only enforcing. Oh and you agreed to terms, so what gives here?

Point 3) It's literally free to pay. If you feel poor in a free game then you have bigger issues in life then gaming.

Point 4) The USA is not the only country in the world with "laws" and "a justice system". I know, this is shocking but here are other things that might shock you as well: Supermarkets, green grass, cows and breathing are not USA exclusive either, who knew right?

I don't know where to post this really, so my best bet would be here. If not, please move this topic to the correct location.

The installation guides for Linux machines is somewhat outdated and has wrong syntax at some points. This counts for all supported distro's. In this post are a few suggestions to fix errors that will break the installation.

All distro's

In step 2 of all installation guides there is wrong syntax, which can result in the command not executing on RHEL en Arch based systems, as it expects an array to be echo'd instead of a single value and the $ is in the wrong location for this.

Old:

export WINEPREFIX="/home/${USER}/.config/projectascension/WoW"

Suggestion:

export WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.config/projectascension/WoW"

In step 3 there is a error with the command to extract the .msi file. The extraction fails because there is no folder called /home/$user/.config/projectascension/WoW made yet. This has to be done in order to install the file properly. Some distro's won't display an error and will install it as a general wine-prefix, instead of the one defined in step 2. This breaks the installation later on.

Old:

Note: the suggestion would make more sense to be added before making the wineprefix in step 2.

Step 4 is obsolete for all distro's other then Debian/Ubuntu, as modern kernels / package managers do this by default and / or is set in settings. They can also be downloaded via the package manager in the Terminal if needed. Graphical installers like Manjaro will give the option to install with these kind of drivers from the start of the installation.

Step 5 is actually incomplete. Since it's an .appimage it needs to actually be made executable or else it fails to even start. Some distro's won't give a warning, just simply do nothing after a double-click.

To make it work the user either has to right-click the file, go to properties and "allow to execute as a program" should be checked. Or use a command such as the following in the download location:

chmod +x ascension-launcher-XX.AppImage

Arch / Manjaro specific:

In step 1 it directs to a package which is no longer in the pacman repository. It has combined with the default mono package and that one should be used instead. Using the old command gives an error, when searching online many pages redirect to the AUR version of mono-complete, which is not compatible with the Ascension Launcher.

Also a minor gripe of mine, using the --no-confirm flag can actually break a machine. If they have manually setup some specific version of mono to compete with old or 32bit software, this command will force a new version on the system and remove the old one, without allowing the user to press 'no' when the system warns about this.

Old (Manjaro / Arch):

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -Sy wine winetricks mono-complete --noconfirm

Suggestion (Manjaro / Arch):

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S wine winetricks mono

I haven't tested the parts of CentOS fully yet, but will run it in a VM and see what I can find. If correct, it should be a nearly 1-1 implementation for Fedora Linux, which I have used before to connect to the server. If I find anything useful there, I will update this post.

Read this post first

To receive the best quality support, the best quality report has to be made. This post explains how to properly make one.

Although there are 5 distro's officially supported, you can make a help request here for other distro's as well. As long as you remember that the Ascension Staff only support Debian, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Arch and CentOS.

General format

For most common problems, such as Launcher or download issues, ingame bugs that only occur on Linux etc. use the following format:

Linux distro name + kernel version. Terminal command: uname -r
Type of problem (Launcher, ingame, etc)
(Optional) Screenshot

Graphics

For graphical issues, include the output of the following Terminal commands in the post:

lspci | grep VGA
glxinfo | grep OpenGL

Sound

For sound issues, include the output of the following Terminal commands in the post:

pulseaudio --version
pulseaudio --dump-conf

If the error shows up that Pulseaudio is not installed, please refer to the manual of your distro how to set it up for your machine. In most typical hardware this can be done with a single install command (and sometimes a reboot to stop Alsa-audio)

Debian/Ubuntu:  sudo apt install pulseaudio
Manjaro/Arch:   sudo pacman -S pulseaudio
CentOS:         sudo dnf install pulseaudio

The screenshot is no longer optional. Include it!

Crash at start of game

Start the game directly without using the Launcher. Make sure to launch it from the Terminal and not via graphical interface. Paste the output that the Terminal shows when the crash occurs. You can start Ascension WoW with the following command, replace "location-of-gamefolder" with the actual location on your machine. If the game is installed ouside of the homefolder, replace $HOME with an absolute path such as /mnt/raid/Games/Ascension

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.config/projectascension/WoW wine $HOME/location-of-gamefolder/Ascension.exe

@Synchronize Hey there, seems like the website hosting of the windows package files is not properly certified.

Rerun the last command with a added parameter:

winetricks win10 ie8 corefonts dotnet45 vcrun2015 --no-check-certificate

This feedback is actually provided by the terminal itself while displaying the error. Just a quick rundown what this actually means:

The download site, called a File Transfer Protocol server (FTP), cannot guarantee a secure connection through accepted certification, only self-made certification. Ubuntu doesn't like it when files are being downloaded via a script, through a self-certified connection. So it refuses to download and/or execute the files, unless you as a user tell it to --no-check-certificate with this download and just run everything like it was certified as Ubuntu desires.

Bit of a mouth full, but that is about as short and accurate as I can put it.

This is a jank fix, but it's a fix.

Use this wget command to download the file, put it in the right folder that the scripts expects and run it again. It should skip cause "already downloaded" and just execute it.

Again, it's jank, but it's a short-term fix. Am in contact with winetricks team and have send them this issue, I have the same issue on my isp, through onion network and vpn.

Step 1 - Installing dependencies

Step 2 - Setting up Ascension WINE bottle

You must setup a "bottle" for the Ascension WINE installation containing necessary dependencies and configurations.

mkdir /home/$USER/.config/projectascension/WoW && cd /home/$USER/.config/projectascension/WoW
export WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.config/projectascension/WoW"
export WINEARCH=win32

Step 3 - Installing dependencies for WINE

Finish up the mandatory steps of the manual installation by installing the remaining dependencies below:

Step 4 - Download the launcher

Latest version can be downloaded from the main website, the download for any distro will work.

Step 5 - Enable launcher to be executed

Go to the location of the launcher. Either use right-click > properties > allow execution of file to activate the file, or use the command below in the folder which contains the launcher, replace XX with the current version number.

chmod +x ascension-launcher-XX.AppImage

If any problems occur, please post them here and DO NOT contact staff about non-supported distro's.
