Just registered and downloaded the content and starting to create a character, but not off to a grand start so far. Is this a bug? Paywalled? The search function on the forums turned up nothing.

@whoopass Al'ar and area 52 are completely free. If you are trying to play one of the closed alphas, yes, you have to purchase access.

I am getting this error as well on both Al'ar and Area 52.
Brand new player here as well, created my account less than half an hour ago and can't access either of the main realms -
can I please get assistance im getting this same issue just made my account
