Can anyone tell me why there is a constant need to download multiple gigabytes to play this game pretty much every day?

You don't have to use the updater to run the game, you can try running it via Ascension.exe because it also works and you don't have to constantly update (run the updater once a week
) -
The above is indeed true but keep in mind that whenever your game stops working properly the first thing you need to try is to update the game again.
