how many characters are you allowed?

I apologize if this has been asked before, I couldn't find another post on the subject. I need to know how many characters you are allowed to have on each realm. Reason being, I have 4 on the season 7 server and 2 in 52, however, one of my son's wants me to create another one on 52 to play with him. Since I know that season 7 will be merged into 52 eventually, I need to know the allowed number of characters so that I don't waste time building a character only to have to delete it later. Make sense? I have this many because I have toons to play with different members of my family (yes, my whole family plays together) and sometimes we play at different times...

@Chleo You can freely enable and disable characters (this doesn't delete them, just deactivates) via the following commands:
.character list (Shows all characters on the realm)
.character activate NAME (Adds char to your list of characters)
.character deactivate NAME (Removes char from list) -
