This seems like the final straw

S7 was great (haven't played before),
S8 was a gamble due to draft (patiently waited for that crap to end)
S9 instead of providing content and make draft/wildcard optional we get EVEN MORE RNG.
Being playing video games for the past 20 years, never seen such high RNG besides some online casinos.
Before all you gamblers jump and say the famous phrase "go play in area52" , i would like to remind you that server doesn't even have 100 people playing most of the times so its not really an option.
This has been fun while it lasted.
Good luck to all of you, will check again next year. -
With how they announced season 9, I thought it was a return to the og 2016 days. But it wasn't and its just the same old infinite gameplay loop of never getting lucky enough and having to spam prestige to get marks to get scrolls to just not be lucky enough and keep doing it over and over again. I especially hate how they handled the the level 1 abilities. They've done this before and gotten rid of it saying that people did not find it fun to spam roll for the perfect abilities. But it makes the starting zones seem populated when you have to spend 30 mins rolling and only 2 hours to get 60.

If you play S9 with the intent of going for a specific build, then yes, it's horrible. But I don't think it was designed for that. You don't even have the build tab for example.
I personally managed to remove all frustration and enjoy this system by not expecting specific abilities and going with the flow of whatever was drawn. Like, not telling me "I need Incinerate for this build to work", more like "what do I have now that is crap which can be re-rolled" and be surprised by fitting abilities/talents.
You'll have noticed, talents are much stronger.
The RNG even trivially fixes balancing specific builds, because if one wants to go for an overpowered build it will be impractical to get all the cards for the various abilities/talents you might need, because RNG. And it's not really fun, and even if one was particularly broken that people would spend days to go for it, it would probably be adjusted by the devs and chasing it would have been a waste of time.
I consider getting better abilities/talents part of the endgame progression, and I do like that.

This definitely seems to be a season that split the playerbase between those who really enjoy RNG and do not. The ingame Ascension chat is rife with both of these sides.
I personally agree with @Chaoss, loving the messy RNG and the fact it is so hard to get a meta-build going, so everyone can stand on equally wobbly footing.
I'm running a build I would never have dreamt of trying or having fun with, and am excited to try the next prestige round to explore more. I don't notice the grind for marks or scrolls because I enjoy this gameplay loop that much.Whether fortunate or not, once we are half way through the season, I can imagine people will have done so much rerolling and testing that meta builds will surface, the mess is no longer as messy and people are pushing mythic+ and raids.
A lot of people argue just as @dumboodaking and @Healplx do here, but I wish some constructive critiques from those who are against this kind of wild RNG:
- What do you think that should be done instead that isn't free-pick of Area 52?
- What can be done for this season's gameplay-loop without making it pseudo free-pick?
- How would you suggest fixing/balancing the parts that irritate you the most? -

If I'm trying to be a healer I shouldn't be getting melee skills. This is almost as bad as Gacha rng.

I can definitely understand wanting biased RNG in that regard.
Perhaps a toggle/choice of playing "Fully Randomized" or Tank/Healer/Melee/Spellcaster/Hybrid where you are given a randomized pool that only include talent/abilities that work for that choice? -

Perhaps a toggle/choice of playing "Fully Randomized" or Tank/Healer/Melee/Spellcaster/Hybrid where you are given a randomized pool that only include talent/abilities that work for that choice? There should be some kind of algorithm or code for rng pulls that's based on your primary stat and beginner skills. For some examples:
-If your first skill isn't a shapeshift form, you shouldn't be get shapeshift skills while you're leveling without a shapeshift build. How does it make sense to get a cat form skill that requires cat form or defense stance if you don't even have a cat form or tank skills in your current deck?
-If I go with Spirit as my main because I want to heal in dungeons, my rng pool should consist of every single spell and talent/enchant that connects with healing and even spell damage spells. There's no excuse to give players Rogue or Cat form abilities/chants when healers don't even use cat forms. Strength and Agility would have a rng pool together. It shouldn't feel like a predatory gacha game where I have to keep spending to get something around my playstyle or play 18 hours a day just to get closer to what I want. The rng vibe wears off when you want to dps, tank, or heal, yet your deck won't even help you beat the easiest mythic dungeon or raid.
-
@BimboBaggins1981 What about hybrid builds? What are your thoughts on playing a type of tank/healer you're not used to or doing DPS in a fun but non-optimal way?
-
@LuchiousCaine imagine a mechanic where u should ban a word to prevent all talents and abilities to be in draft with that word XD
-
@nesolite Dude, the opposite could work.
You have a whole bunch of tags that resembles something you would use in the talent search bar, like bear, holy, block, heal, threat, melee, etc...
And you have to choose 3-5 of such tags. Any ability/talent with those tags in them are added into the draw pool.So you could try to make a pool aimed for Forbidden Technique with something like Shadow, Ranged, Stealth - or a pool aimed for holy healing with holy, heal, spirit.

@LuchiousCaine
Actually a good idea. Too bad developers not going to change a thing in this season.I'm thinking about skipping rest of this season too. I like the idea of manastorm but leveling is very rng for my liking. You can get a Cat or Bear ability without form, ability that require stealth or prowl without it. You even get few skills that require different main stat than one you selected. So besides that 8 skill that you get from cards you have zero control on your build. That more frustrating than anything else.
And imagine i started this season in Adventure mode with tame beast and auto shot without a singe card. After that i got just sht and crp from rng so imagine the fun levelling in Adventure mode just auto shooting everything to death.
