Mythic key not progressing

Is the only way to upgrade your mythic gear by increasing your own personal mythic keystone? I jumped into dungeons and did higher level on someone else's key and mine does not increase.
If I wait the 7 days will I get a new one at the level I last completed or do I have to be the one to kick off the run for mine to increase?

It does not grow on the weekly reset. I had to be the one to start the run.
